Yes, hair developer can expire. An unopened bottle usually lasts a long time if you store it well. Once you open it, it slowly loses strength, so use it within the time shown on the label. Once you mix developer with color, use it right away and throw out what is left.
This guide explains how long developer lasts, how to tell when it has gone bad, and how to store it. If you also have an old box of color, read our guide on whether hair dye expires.
What Is Hair Developer?
Developer is the cream or liquid you mix with hair color or lightener. Its main active ingredient is hydrogen peroxide. The peroxide lightens your natural pigment and helps the new color develop inside the hair.
Hydrogen peroxide is not stable forever. Over time it breaks down into water and oxygen. As that happens, the developer gets weaker. Weak developer cannot lift or process color the way it should.
How Long Does Developer Last?
| State of the developer | How long it lasts | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Unopened and sealed | Often a few years, so check the label or batch code | Store it in a cool, dry, dark place |
| Opened, not mixed | Check the open-jar symbol on the bottle, often 6M or 12M (6 or 12 months) | Close the cap tightly after every use |
| Mixed with color or lightener | Use it right away, within about an hour | Throw out any leftover mix |
Brands differ, so your own bottle is the best guide. The small open-jar symbol on many beauty products tells you how many months the product stays good after opening. If your bottle has a printed date, follow that.
In the US, there is no law that sets a shelf life for cosmetics. The FDA says it is up to each manufacturer to work out how long its product lasts.

Does Developer Go Bad Once Opened?
Yes, opened developer goes bad faster than a sealed bottle. Each time you open it, air gets in. Heat, light and dirty tools can speed up the breakdown too. A bottle that has been opened many times, or left with the cap loose, may lose strength well before its date.
Signs Your Developer Has Gone Bad
Check the bottle before you mix anything. Look for these signs.
- The cream has split, turned lumpy or gone thin and watery.
- It smells sour or strange, not like it did when it was new.
- The color has changed. Most developer is white or clear.
- The bottle is leaking, cracked or looks swollen.
- The bottle was stored somewhere hot, such as a car or a steamy bathroom.
- Your last color did not lift, or it came out darker than planned.
If you notice any of these, replace the bottle. A new bottle costs far less than fixing a color that went wrong.
What Happens If You Use Expired Developer?
Weak developer usually gives you a disappointing result rather than an injury. The color may not take at all. It may come out patchy, darker or brassy, or fail to cover gray. Lightener may stop lifting halfway, which can leave hair orange or yellow.
Old or not, always do the patch test in your product instructions before you color. The FDA’s hair dye guide explains why a patch test matters every time.
Does 20 Volume Developer Expire?
Yes. Every strength of developer expires in the same way, because they are all hydrogen peroxide. The volume number only tells you how strong it is.
| Volume | Peroxide | Common use |
|---|---|---|
| 10 volume | 3% | Depositing color, toning, little or no lift |
| 20 volume | 6% | Standard gray coverage and about 1 to 2 levels of lift |
| 30 volume | 9% | More lift, about 2 to 3 levels |
| 40 volume | 12% | Maximum lift, best left to a professional |
Stronger developer can irritate the scalp, so follow your color brand’s instructions closely. If you need a big change, a colorist is the safer choice.
Does Cream Developer Expire?
Yes. Cream developer and liquid developer both expire. Cream developer is easier to check, because a change in texture is easy to see. If your cream has turned runny, grainy or separated, it is time for a new bottle.
How to Store Hair Developer
- Keep it in a cool, dry, dark place. L’Oréal Paris says hair color keeps best at about 71.6 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Close the cap tightly as soon as you have poured what you need.
- Never pour unused or mixed developer back into the bottle.
- Use a clean bowl and brush, so nothing gets into the bottle.
- Skip the bathroom, where steam builds up.
- Never leave it in a car. In a Dallas summer, a parked car gets far too hot, and the FDA warns that heat can break down the preservatives in cosmetics.
Can You Save Mixed Developer and Color?
No. Once developer meets color, the reaction starts and does not stop. Healthline says mixed hair dye must be used within one hour and cannot be stored. Never put mixed color in a sealed jar or bottle. Mix only what you need, and throw the rest away when you are done.

When to Let a Colorist Handle It
Home color works best for simple, all-over shades. It is a poor fit when you want to go much lighter, fix a color mistake or cover a lot of gray evenly.
At Capelli Salon, our colorists mix fresh color and developer for every appointment and choose the right strength for your hair. See our hair color salon in Dallas, our blonde specialist or balayage. Wondering what salon color involves? Read what affects the cost of hair color.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does developer expire?
Yes. Developer is hydrogen peroxide, and it slowly breaks down into water and oxygen. Unopened bottles last a long time, but opened developer weakens faster. Check the label for a date or an open-jar symbol.
Does hair developer expire once opened?
Yes. Once opened, air, heat and light make it lose strength faster. Use it within the months shown on the open-jar symbol, and keep the cap closed tightly.
How long is developer good for after opening?
It depends on the brand. Many bottles show 6M or 12M on the open-jar symbol, which means 6 or 12 months after opening. Store it well to get the full time.
Can I use expired developer?
It is best not to. Weak developer can leave color patchy, dark or brassy, and lightener may not lift. Replace it if it is past its date or looks, smells or feels different.
How long is hair dye good for after mixing with developer?
Use it right away, within about one hour. Mixed color cannot be saved, so throw out any leftover mix and never store it in a sealed container.
How do I throw away old developer?
Check your local household waste rules, and never mix it with other chemicals. Do not pour mixed color back into the bottle.
