When you book balayage at Capelli Salon, the form asks you to pick partial or full. Both are hand-painted and both grow out softly. The difference is how much of your hair gets lightened, and that changes the look, the time in the chair and how you wear your hair afterwards.

Here is how to choose, from the colorists who paint balayage every day in Dallas, Frisco and Austin.

Full balayage with soft dimension on long hair at Capelli Salon

What Is Partial Balayage?

Partial balayage lightens the parts of your hair people see most: the top layer, along your part and the pieces around your face. The hair underneath and at the back stays your natural color.

When you wear your hair down, it looks sun-kissed and bright. It is a softer change, and the appointment is shorter.

What Is Full Balayage?

Full balayage paints lightness through your whole head, including underneath and the back. You get dimension from every angle, so it still looks finished in a ponytail, a bun or with your hair tucked behind your ears.

It is a bigger change and takes longer in the chair, because there is more hair to paint.

Partial vs Full Balayage on Dark or Brunette Hair

On dark brown and black hair, the contrast between your natural color and the lightened pieces is bigger. A partial on dark hair can look striking around the face but very dark underneath when you move. If you want a blended, all-over brunette balayage in caramel or honey tones, full usually looks more even.

Dark hair also needs more lifting to reach lighter shades. If you want to go much lighter, your colorist may plan it over two visits to keep your hair healthy. That is normal, and it is better for your ends. Read more about balayage for brunettes and dark hair.

Can You Start With Partial and Go Full Later?

Yes, and it is a smart way to try balayage. Start with a partial, live with it for a few weeks, and add more brightness at your next visit if you want it. Many clients also do the reverse: a full balayage once, then partials and a gloss or toner in between to stretch the time before the next full appointment.

How Long Does Each One Last?

Both grow out softly with no hard root line. The lightened pieces don’t wash out; what fades is the tone. Gentle shampoo, cool water and heat protection keep either one looking fresh for longer. Frequently Asked Questions

Is partial balayage enough?

For a soft, natural refresh when you wear your hair down, yes. If you want brightness when your hair is up, or a bigger change, choose full.

Does full balayage damage hair more than partial?

Full balayage lightens more of your hair, so more hair is exposed to lightener. Your colorist checks your hair’s condition first and adjusts the plan to protect it.

Which one is better for highlights that grow out?

Both grow out softly. Full balayage gives you more lightness to grow out, while partial keeps more of your natural color. Comparing balayage with foils? Read balayage vs highlights.

What if I pick the wrong one on the booking form?

That’s fine. Every new client starts with a free color consultation, and your colorist will confirm partial or full with you before any color goes on.
